Have you ever rode a bike? Gone swimming? Played baseball or another sport? Imagine missing out on these activities. 70% of 56,000 blind or visually impaired, school aged children have never participated in any sport or physical activity or even a limited physical education program. They have missed out on the benefits of sports and physical activity including confidence, self-esteem, muscular strength and social interaction.

Now imagine the impact of participating in sports for the first time. We make that happen for young people. These sports include:

  • Goalball
  • Judo
  • Tandem Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Track and Field
  • Powerlifting
  • Skiing
  • Beep Baseball
  • Showdown
  • Golf
  • Other recreational activities

By hosting events throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, we introduce students who are blind and visually impaired to sports and physical activity. Our work includes school visits, clinics, camps, development competitions and awareness events.

Student experience tandem bikingSchool visits
Upon request from schools or parents, we work with students in physical education classes. We help blind or visually impaired students become more engaged with their peers. During school visits, we also work with teachers to provide adaptations for sports.

Clinics
Clinics provide Paralympic experiences for students including goalball, judo and tandem cycling and others. Often 10 to 60 blind or visually impaired students participate. Parents are welcome to join in, too.

Development Competitions
Teams learn a sport during Development Competitions. They develop the skills needed to participate in a tournament.

Awareness Events
NWABA Awareness Events demonstrate how to adapt sports for blind or visually impaired students. Others with sight can also participate and learn what it is like to be blind or visually impaired.
