Vancouver, WA—February 1, 2010—The Northwest Association for Blind Athletes (NWABA) is very proud to announce that we have partnered with Northwest Regional ESD (NWRESD) to host a goalball clinic for blind and visually impaired students. The clinic will take place on Friday, April 2nd.
“We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to Blind and Visually Impaired students in Oregon. Our goal is to continue to host clinics and camps in various sports across the Northwest to give students the opportunity to participate in sports, and stay physically active.” – said Programs Director Billy Henry.
This clinic will be the pilot event for our Sports Outreach and Development Program. The goal of this program is to give blind and visually students the opportunity to try new sports and learn ways to stay physically active. Many of the students who participate in these clinics will be learning sports for the first time.
About NWABA:
The Northwest Association for Blind Athletes (NWABA) is a 501(c)(3) Charitable Organization. It was formed on May 5, 2007 by a group of visually impaired athletes because there was a lack of sports opportunities in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.
The mission of NWABA is to provide opportunities for blind and visually impaired persons to become engaged in physical activity and sports. We will provide scholarships and host events to build confidence and physical fitness. The confidence gained from sports will inspire athletes to follow their dreams in life and in sports.
NWABA provides opportunities to athletes in Powerlifting, Goalball, Judo, Swimming, Track and Field, Tandem Cycling, Skiing, and Wrestling. Our dream is to make a difference in the lives of every visually impaired individual in the Northwest and give them the opportunity to participate in sports and physical activity. Sports have a life-changing impact on an athlete’s life. When athletes realize that they can excel in sports, it builds the confidence to excel in school or work.
About NWRESD:
NWRESD’s mission is to provide equitable support our school districts in their mission to education all students. The agency works collaboratively with the 20 public school districts in Clatsop, Columbia, Tillamook, and Washington counties, Oregon, to jointly determine the programs and services the agency can provide as we work together to meet the educational needs in the region. NWRESD administrators meet regularly with superintendents to discuss needs and priorities and how the ESD can best meet them.
Purpose: Education Service Districts were established by the Oregon legislature to provide services that local school districts are not able to offer economically or because of the small numbers of students involved. Services are provided in a centralized format that is efficient and allows for maximum use of public dollars. These services include special education (birth through age 21), professional development, and technology.
