Vancouver, Washington-May 5th, 2022-Northwest Association for Blind Athletes (NWABA) is proud to announce it is celebrating the organization’s 15th year anniversary this month. Fifteen years ago, a group of visually impaired students who wanted to ensure that people who are blind and visually impaired had access to participate in sports and physical activity formed the organization. In its first year, NWABA served six athletes. Today, NWABA is a rapidly expanding charitable organization that delivers tailored programs and services to more than 2,000 blind or visually impaired children, youth, adults and military veterans, offering 15 unique sports in four states. NWABA’s programs and services are more than learning the rules of the game. They offer life-changing opportunities for individuals to improve self-confidence, promote independence, create an inclusive community of supporters, and build the skills necessary to succeed in all areas of life, including school and employment.
“Northwest Association for Blind Athletes is incredibly excited to celebrate our 15th year anniversary of providing life-changing opportunities to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. When I was 15, I founded the organization because I wanted to participate in powerlifting with my friends. We wanted an opportunity to compete, to be a part of a team, and to show others what was possible. Today, NWABA provides opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities with visual impairments to reach their greatest potential in all areas of life. With our supporters, volunteers, athletes and their families by our side, the future is bright and I look forward to making the next 15 years our best yet. Together, we are truly making a difference.” said Billy Henry, Founder, President & CEO, Northwest Association for Blind Athletes.
Within the last several years, NWABA has expanded its programs and services throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, and is heading into its busiest time of year. Year-round sports events and Camp Spark maintain full schedules, providing activities such as tandem biking, swimming, hiking, kayaking, snow shoeing, skiing, and a variety of other sports. In its 15th year, NWABA will be serving more individuals than ever before.
