Most of you who are already familiar with NWABA may have come across Erik Selden, either by name or hearing him speak at one of our many events. We’d like to introduce Erik to everyone through our newsletter. Erik has been involved with NWABA for the past 12 years and has served as our current Board Chair for 10 of those years.
Erik grew up in San Bernardino, California with a love of sports and met Billy Henry by chance at a Vancouver Business Journal event, when Billy was just 17 years old. They had an immediate connection. Erik’s father had lost his vision in one eye as a youth, and after learning of NWABA’s mission—to provide opportunities through sports and physical activity to individuals who are blind and visually impaired—he was ready to get involved. Erik’s participation with NWABA allows him to support his love of sports and continue the legacy of his father.
Erik credits his mother as the catalyst for instilling his love of sports at a young age. In high school, he played defense on the varsity football team as a sophomore, and was recruited by several Pac-10 schools. However, Erik earned a scholarship to participate in football and track at Portland State University, which brought him to the Pacific Northwest. He has since made his home in Vancouver with his wife, Elizabeth, and their son, Grant.
Having been in the financial sector for over 15 years, Erik most recently made the move to Washington Trust Bank as their Senior Vice President and Team Leader. Along with his full-time role at Washington Trust Bank, Erik lends his expertise in finance to others through his blog, podcast (Bourbon with a Banker) and as a public speaker. In addition to NWABA, Erik gives his time to also support the Portland Activities & Athletics League, a local organization who serves to help youth avoid the juvenile system by providing athletic, recreational, and educational opportunities to youth.
Erik has a passion for numbers and for helping people. He knows firsthand the impact that sports had on his life and the impact of having someone or something positive in your life to help you flourish.
