Embracing NWABA Virtual Workout Programs: A New Era of Connection

Finding New Opportunities in a Changing World

When the world moved to online platforms in 2020, many felt a loss of connection. At the Northwest Association for Blind Athletes (NWABA), however, we found new opportunities to build community in ways we had never explored before. NWABA embraced Zoom to keep active, foster existing relationships, and cultivate new ones. This shift marked the launch of our NWABA virtual workout programs, beginning with classes three days a week.

From Temporary Solution to Daily Routine

For many athletes, these virtual workout programs started as a temporary solution to stay active when in-person meetings were not possible. However, they quickly evolved into a vital and permanent part of daily routines. As popularity grew, so did our offerings. Today, NWABA hosts eight virtual workouts per week, Monday through Friday, on Zoom. Additionally, we have a YouTube channel where athletes can access these workouts at their convenience.

Accessible Workouts for All

All NWABA virtual workout programs are audio-described with high-contrast video. Audio description allows athletes to follow workouts with clear directions on proper form, while high-contrast video helps those with low vision follow the instructor visually. This combination makes our workouts accessible to a wider population. By hosting free workouts online, we break down barriers such as transportation, accessibility, and cost, allowing athletes to join independently from a space where they feel comfortable, familiar, safe, accepted, and celebrated.

Building an Inclusive Community

Through these virtual workout programs, NWABA team members and athletes have created an inclusive community that supports each other and celebrates the small victories and progress that come with each session. The relationships we’ve built extend beyond fitness. Athlete Tricia from Virginia shares, “I came into NWABA in very good physical condition. I was very fit. Even so, I have greatly benefited from being in NWABA! I have improved my core strength a lot! My variety is much better now that I have more options for fitness classes. I feel very safe, respected, and valued in NWABA. I feel that joining NWABA is one of the best decisions that I have ever made in my life!”
