What’s The Real Reason Behind Giving Tuesday?

This year it falls on November 28th. Each year, around this time, you might receive several emails, letters and advertisements centered around Giving Tuesday. Have you ever wondered how this all started?

GivingTuesday began in 2012, when a group of innovators sought to create a movement that harnessed the power of social media and technology to promote charitable giving. They wanted to establish a giving day that reminded everyone of the true meaning of the holiday season, encouraging people to think beyond materialistic pursuits and contribute to meaningful causes that positively impact society. The goal of Giving Tuesday is to foster generosity, create positive change, build community, empower nonprofits and make a global impact.

This group rallied nonprofits, businesses, and influencers to spread the message and inspire others to get involved in acts of giving. Hashtags like #GivingTuesday amplified the movement’s reach, making it a viral sensation across multiple social media platforms.

Giving Tuesday is not just about donating money. It’s about giving back any way you can. Here are some ways you can participate in Giving Tuesday:

  • Make a charitable donation – Visit nwaba.org/donate to give a gift to NWABA.
  • Give the gift of time – Volunteer your time and love of sport as an athlete guide or at one of our fundraising events.
  • Fundraise for a cause by starting a peer-to-peer campaign. Ask us how.
  • Donate goods and supplies – NWABA has an Amazon Wishlist full of much needed items.
  • Support small businesses.
  • Advocate for a cause.
  • Perform random acts of kindness.
  • Engage in corporate giving. Does your company match employee donations?
  • Start a social media campaign by using the hashtag #GivingTuesday, to bring awareness to your followers about your support for NWABA.

This year, on November 28th, after celebrating with friends and family, or hitting the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, think about giving back to NWABA however way you choose on #GivingTuesday.
