The Northwest Association for Blind Athletes (NWABA) announced today that it will be hosting Spokane’s first Goalball Awareness Event. Spectators will have the opportunity to watch Inland Norwest’s own Spokane Spin Goalball Team scrimmage, learn more about the sport of goalball, and about the abilities of people who are blind and visually impaired. The event will take place on July 30th from 1:00pm-3:00pm at the East Central Community Center (500 S. Stone Street, Spokane, WA 99202).
Goalball is a Paralympic sport played by individuals who are blind and visually impaired. Developed after WWII as a way to keep blinded veterans physically active, it has become the premiere team game for blind athletes. Played competitively by men and women, it is a very fast paced, physically challenging, strategic and exciting game.
“We are very excited to host this one of a kind event in Spokane. The scrimmage will give the newly formed Spokane Spin the opportunity to participate in the team’s first scrimmage as well as giving the public a demonstration of goalball.” said Executive Director Billy Henry
The Spokane Spin is part of NWABA’s Sports Development Program to increase the number of opportunities for people with visual impairments to participate in sports and physical fitness.
